strange question
strange question
hi guys, this may sound like a strange question and probably is but here goes. I have a 54 plate gv 2.0 and when in 5th gear i get up to about 55mph and it seems as though the car wants another gear just by the the sound of the engine revving. It does have a towbar fitted and may have been used for towing in the past. Any thoughts guys or is this a strange question ? Thanks.

Re: strange question
Should easily do motorway speeds (70-80mph) in 5th...
Are you in low range or something?
Not entirely sure on the setup on the GV but I guess its got a 4wd gearstick? Check its in 2H, not 4L.
Sorry if it seems like a really dumbass answer but I don't know how much experience you have with the system

Re: strange question
They are quite revvy. A few times I've felt like it could do with a 6th gear just for motorway cruising.
What kind of rpm are you doing at 60mph? Wonder if someone Previous has fitted undersize tyres to slightly reduce the gearing for towing.

Re: strange question
Thanks for the advice guys, yes it is in 2H and this is my first car with selectable 4wd. My previous was a toyota Rav 4 which was perm 4wd and a different drive altogether. I did once own a suzuki 750 bike and this was a high revving bike compared to other bikes so maybe it's a suzuki thing. Thanks again.

Re: strange question
My SJ has a 4 speed and sounds like it's asking for another gear at 35mph, but will go all the way to 70 without any fuss, though I tend to cruise at 50. Small Japanese engines do generally tend to be quite high revving. The Hull University Formula Student race car uses a Honda CBR600 engine which, as standard, ticks over at 1300rpm and will rev past 12,000. We have it ticking a bit higher because of the 20mm air restrictor, single TB and custom plenum we have to use.

Re: strange question
yeah, thanks guys i was just worried that there was something not quite right with the engine. I do change the oil every 6 months with the recomended 5/30 oil so it's not neglected.

Re: strange question
It's all down to that fact that the Japanese were well ahead of the game. Rather than just dump a big heavy lump of an engine in a vehicle (see appendix 1) and hope for the best, they've always been very good at getting a lot from a small engine.
