Rear axle gone porous

My sammys rear axle has gone porous on the diff housing above the filler plug. Now I was wondering if I could cut the whole diff pan off and fabricate a new one? Question being, does it need to be a certain shape for oil splash or can I just make a big fat pan shape and weld it on?

As long as its sort of resembles the original shape and the diff clears it I wouldn't have thought it would cause a problem. most of the oil going up there will be in the teeth of the ring gear so doubt the shape would make a huge difference.

Excellent! I'll get cracking over the weekend. Have you fitted your vit r&p yet?

No I've been a little lazy on the truck recently as I've been doing some odds and ends round the house.

Should be back on it soon though as its just run out of MOT.

There is a good write up in the How-To guides section if you were going to ask me about fitting though.

Yeh I'll have a flick through cheers. I was going to ask what the zook was like after they had been fitted. I've got 31's on with a 410 transfer box but I find the gearing a bit too high still.

I've heard they can be rather low with 31s.

I should be fitting at least the rear within the next few weeks so if you haven't tried it yourself then if you keep an eye out for my build thread popping up I will update on what its like on 33s. Might even try it on some 31s for the sake of science if I can borrow Trotters off him for an afternoon. (He probably wants to try it himself at some point)

I've got the 410 with 31's, and Vit R&P's and find it okay. I've also got a Jimny gearbox mated to the M series engine, so I'm not sure off hand how the ratios compare to the Samurai box.

All in all no complaints though, go for it.

Sounds good! As it stands I cant 5th gear on the road, it's way to tall for it to pull and 1st 4low is like to be just that bit lower for a bit more control without having to slip the clutch
