Ideal 1.6 8v engine temp?

Anyone got advice on what temperatures my new elec rad fan should cut in?
Bear in mind it gets bloody hot here in Cyprus and when crawling slowly the engine can get really hot. Against this however, I don't want the fans running constantly because I set the "ON" temp too low.

The engine is supposed to run at about 86°c I believe.

Well I think that's when the thermostat opens anyway. Don't know how that corresponds to fan cut in though.

The fan should switch on at about 90*, then cut off when it gets back down to 82*
Running temp is between 82 and 90 (ish)

The way mine is set up i sometimes think it gets a little hotter than I would like before the first fan kicks in, my engine usually runs in the low 80s.
I think in a hotter country I would run a slightly lower temp to keep the coolant a bit cooler, the thermostat will still regulate the engine temp via coolant flow.

Thanks very much for the replies people, some great info there. I have just been reading a couple of good threads on zukicrawlers - will re-read them tomorrow and will add detail to this thread for others.
Thanks again.

Well here are two links I found interesting. There is quite a bit of info here but you have to convert Fahrenheit to Centigrade to make sense of it - that is of course if you can be bothered :-)

Interesting way this guy got around his heating issues(make sure you look at page 2):-
