Starter Motor Problem

As some of you know I'm having a lot of trouble with getting my engine to run. Now I'm ran into another problem, this time it's the starter motor  Basically it doesn't turn the engine over and gets very hot !! So much so that the HT has started to melt and smoke ! I whipped it off and gave it test off the engine, perfectly fine, every time. Stripped it down anyway just to check the internals, all fine. Put it back on the engine, same problem again. Some times it works ( not very often ) It almost seems as if the battery is low but the same problem occurs when I put the battery from my daily driver on and I know that's good. What I don't understand is why it work when off the engine but not when it's bolted on :S

Could be you need the clicky starter fix?

Some of the SJ's have a starter cable that was only just man enough for the job, and over time it degrades to the point where it can't carry enough current anymore.

Look up the clicky starter fix.

Hmmmm.............. How many of you earth the starter motor. I know it should be earthed as it's on the block but it's almost like it need a better earth as the negative on the battery gets very hot.

Where does your earth strap go to on the block? it should be on one of the starter bolts.

Before I had it bolted on with one of the intake manifold bolts. It's now bolted to one of the starter motor mounting bolts :) Though even with that done that starter motor has officially had it ! So had to swap it. Turns out with a bit of re-drilling my old 410 starter fits a treat, engine now turns over first time, every time :D This being done, still no luck with the old girl firing up :x

I added a second earth strap to my block. It's 240ac mains earth cable. The (not very) flexible stuff that you get between the RCD and your plug sockets. I think it's about 4awg or something stupid like that?

Didn't need it, just had it lying around and went a bit mad.

If the starter is burning itself out it usually means one of the magnets has come off the inside of the motor casing... been there many times! ;)
