Firstly thanks for reading this.

I have a 1986 SJ413 with a very noisy transfer box, I changed the oil yesterday and it's full of aluminium dust/shavings. This box has the hand brake on the back of the box. I also have another 1991 SJ413 with the hand brake on the wheels.

Is it possible to swap transfer boxes between the two? The later box looks like it has the mounts for the hand brake assembly and I may have to swap prop shafts but before I start the work and find it's not possible I thought I'd ask.

Any help or comments gratefully accepted.

the transfer boxes should be interchangeable. you will have to take the flange of the 413 tbox, and take the shim out of the oil seal on the box you are removing, and fit this shim and the handbrake assembly to the 413 box. the shim is like a bit of pipe, which replicates the protruding bit on the flange, to seal off the transfer box output.

I'd slacken the nuts on the flanges before you remove the gearbox too. As they are very tight!

Thanks for the info on the shim. However, both my boxes appear to have a shim fitted (see photos) I've tried the hand brake assemble on the 'new' box and the prop shaft connector on the old box and they seem to swap without problems......will this be ok?

Hopefully you can see they're the same.

looks like they both have the shim fitted, and the old one must have had a split flange on it. just bolt the handbrake drum etc on, and you're good as gold

Job done! Thanks to all those who helped. One thing though, the prop shafts (g/box to tfr box) are different. The yoke on the 1986 car has a more squared end and it fouls one the gearbox when the 1991 transfer box is fitted. No problems though as I swapped the shafts as well.

Now all I need to do is swap the rest of the good stuff from the '91 car to the '86 car then I'm ready o start importing the car into France.

Incidentaly there's a chap on E_Bay selling LHD lights but he says they're std 7" lucas units and will fit an SJ if std BMC (mini or MGB) headlamp bowls are fitted. The '91 car needed complete Mini/MGB units fitting as the Suzuki items were 3 times the price. Does anyone know if I can fit these lights to my car? I could just check but I thought I'd ask first.

as far as I'm aware, the light's used in sj's are bmc standart lights, as I swapped one of my headlight's into my brother's morris 1100, and it was exactly the same.
