Cold weather and Antifreeze..............

Post by RickUK » Fri Nov 21, 2014 6:53 pm

Just thought that although i dont have any cooling problems with my V6 Vitara i could not be certain that it had any Anti-Freeze in it,so checked the handbook and bought some today, topped it up with the right amount and then run the engine for a few minutes with the heater open so that all the new contents got around the full system.

Cheaper to add anti-freeze than having a major freeze up of the cooling system like i had about 10 years back,as luck it was only a core plug that pushed out.

Worth thinking about that winter is coming fast.

You should run anti freeze all year round as it prevents rust build up in the water channels. 50/50 mix, I change mine every winter.
If it ticks over...leave it

I do usually, but during the hot summer months when you normally would have a little evaporation in the coolant i have always just topped it up with normal water this of course dilutes it a little,so as this is the 1st winter that i have owned it i thought i would just chuck the right amount of anti freeze in the radiator. It may well of had anti-freeze in it,but it wont freeze up this winter anyway.

To be honest if a car is running fine and dandy then all i basically check is oil, water and tyre pressures, this has served me well for many decades. If it ain't broke dont fix it is my motto :hahaha:
