Right I have hunted the Internet and can't seem to find the answer I am after so hopefully your greater knowledge will help.

Firstly I have a 1984 sj410 for off road use only and very minimal on road.

What's the biggest types I should fit? I have done a very intensive virtual lift all round so clearance isn't my issue I am more worried about breaking diffs cvs axles etc and since I am going to run the standard 1.0ltr lose of power.

I really want to run 33s if I can what mods do I really need to do to be able to run them safely without high risk of breaking things and to still be bloody competitive unfortunately I am up against some bloody good Nissan safaris of my mates will post pics some time.

I've ran 33x12.50 maxxis buckshots on 410 axles with a 1.6 engine and 4.6 gearing in the Tbox, only ever blew up 1 CV joint but I'm quite a gentle driver (most of the time) as long as you don't bounce and blast up stuff at full throttle or on full lock they survive quite well.

Best option is to upgrade to samurai axles and fit chromoly shafts and CVs, and a full float rear conversion. that's what I now run and have never had a breakage since.

Cheers for the info unfortunately it sounds bloody expensive. Can you elaborate more on this full float thing you speak of??

In a non floating axle, the weight of the vehicle is carried by the half shaft inside the axle, and transferred to the axle through the axle bearing. The half shaft also has to turn the wheel, meaning it has to bear 2 sets of forces.

In a full float, the weight of the vehicle is transferred directly into the axle housing through 2 bearings that the wheel "floats" on, and the half shaft only bears rotational forces. The Rob Storr full float kits also have stronger shafts.

I'd like to get a full float kit eventually.

If your 410 has it's 970cc engine I'd go 31" max. You'll struggle with 33's. Not enough oomph.

I've got a 410, with a 1.3 Swift GS engine, and a SJ413 gearbox. (Still running 410 axles and T-box).
It's on 31s at the moment, and to be honest, it's pretty gutless unless it's in low range. And even then, anything relatively steep, I have to tackle in first gear. When I had the 28s on, it used to get up most hills in 2nd, sometimes even in third gear.

On a 410, unless the 4 speed box is massively down geared, I'd not run 33s.

I was thinking 31s max and yeah running stock 970cc engine on 4 speed transmission with 410 transfer. And 410 diffs. Only work I am doing currently is rebuilding it and body/ bar work.

When I become a bit more financially soundi want to put Hilux diffs and likely a v6 or v8 in it. Also then be running 35" simex that's the ultimate goal but prob a long time yet

Keep it Suzuki and stick a V6 in it. Leave it pure...

Would a V6 be a bit heavy? The J20a 2.0 litre would be a better bet in my mind - a lot less weight, not a lot less power.

As for Hilux diffs - they won't fit. Unless you mean hilux axles? That's been done, and works well, but you lose a lot in ground clearance - about an inch. Which is like 2" on the tyres - I can get through stuff on 31" tyres that my mate with 32" tyres and Toyota axles grounds out on (hairyguy from the hilux pickup owners club - he's got a swb land cruiser). 35" tyres on Hilux axles would give similar ground clearance to an SJ on 33" tyres - bear that in mind before you spend the money on huge tyres and axles!
