I'm looking at making some cold air intake kits but I'll be testing them on my own GV...
I know the J20a and the H25a both have some sort of resonator in the intake, I have plans of using the MAF sensor inline as it should be and using a piece of aluminium tube between the cone filter and the MAF sensor to put the intake air temp sensor in, it's just I need to know if I can remove the "resonator" with it causing problems?

The part circled in white is what I mean, i have read that it is to quieten the intake noise, but I have also read it is to smoothen the air flow at a certain rpm?
I just need to know if it's ok to remove, as I was going to make cold air intakes starting from the throttle body to a cone filter with a heat shield around it, also thinking of making a bigger air box to house the cone filter with a tube to supply cold fresh air, maybe even with a window in it like this...

If I do get interest in this sort of thing then I might make a few different setups for SJ's and other vitara's..

But you won't be improving anything or even making an intake that sucks in colder air than they normally do???? The intake is in the wing already so you don't get hot air from the engine bay.
Waste of time and money for no gain in my opinion.

I know the standard intake gets cold air, so I don't think there will be any difference in the intake temperature, but I think it could get the cold air into the throttle body quicker,, and more of it, I think I could make a kit for less restriction...

But does the standard airbox restrict anything? I doubt it and how do you know that whatever you make will flow better than the original without a flow bench? Or a massive R&D department like Suzuki have?
It's pretty much proven that even most of these large companies that produce expensive aftermarket cold air intakes etc can't make any noticeable differences to a cars performance so why waste your time? I'm a function over form kind of person. Or function and form.....not form with no function.

I plan on using my obd2 plug to monitor the MAF, MAP and IAT sensors to see if the air is cooler and if the air flow is higher at all different revs, just to see if it is improving at all, if it makes it worse then I'd refit the original intake and box again, if there are gains then id make kits and keep one on my own, I won't be able to see any power gains or decreases but I will see if it's reducing restriction or not...
I don't want it to make a bit of noise, I do want to see if any it is possible to get some improvements...
I plan to do a grounding kit, I'll measure resistance readings from different places on the engine to the negative terminal of the battery to see if the ground kit reduces the resistances, then I shoukd see if that kit does improve the current flow as they claim to...
Re: Grand Vitara Cold Air Intake (remove resonator?)
Mostly these guys got equal power to stock, or lost power.
With a *ridiculous* cold air intake kit, these guys got 1.7% gains. You are much better off spending your time looking into other options - you won't notice a 1.7% gain in power, and if you sell these things you'll likely get a lot of complaints from people who also don't notice the gains (if there are any).
Gotta agree with Scottie, this is just more trouble than it's worth, mate.
Maybe port matching your intake and exhaust would give you a noticeable increase?

Tbh I cant imagine there would be a market for them anyway. Most people who mod a GV or any 4x4 want offroad mods and would be fitting snorkels etc.
A GV isn't really the first choice for most people chasing performance
I'm not trying to shoot you down for having ideas but I think the time, money and effort should be spent elsewhere. If you want any noticeable gains you are going to need to spend quite a bit of mong and as Anton says it's mostly other areas that you need to improve flow to see worthwhile gains.

I've seen all of MCM's videos and seen their more recent cold air intake video on a N/A car, and they had about 5% increase in power, Im planning on teaming that with a cat back exhaust, I have thought about porting and blueprinting but I'm mainly looking for something to do so I can put my qualifications to good use, I've done motor vehicle in college and couldn't get into a garage, but that's probably because the garages round here want dumb idiots to work for them, I would never work in a back street garage after what they've done to my dads previous cars and now mine...
Just looking to make some money doing what I enjoy doing, instead of working in a poxy kitchen factory with people I don't even like, but of a rant but it's frustrating going to college and then not being able to do anything with the qualifications...
I do see what you mean about marketing as a cold air intake isn't much good at all when going through deep muddy water, probably best for the swifts and ignis, maybe the new shape GV as I've not seen much off-roading in them...

If its a project for your own car then have a tinker around, you may or may not help the airflow side of things, will it be a product that folks would want to buy with little if any gain then the answer would be 'i doubt it' very much.
I can see alot of time being spent on it but little return,if the motor is running fine just leave it as it is,i have had my old style Vitara 2ltr V6 a year and its totally bullit prove and never had any mechanical problems with it,i did increase the tyre pressures a few lbs though from normal and this did improve fuel consumption a gnats todger.

Jay do you mean the one when they used an s2000? If so that's a whole different animal and isn't really comparable. It's already a performance engine that revs to 9000rpm compared to the j20a's 6500rpm and if you notice its only up high in the Rev range that it gains 5kw (4%) because the stock airbox is actually restrictive on an s2000 in the high rev range, in the mid range (around the j20a peak rpm) it only made 2-3kw more power and down low where you are going to want it, it actually made less power.
