Now apart from fuel gauge faulty....the generator charge light is on all the time put voltmeter across battery and no no rise in voltage when revved up usually goes up to 13.8 volts.....is there a fuse in line with the generator or does it mean a faulty generator unit ???? strange the brake light warning light is also on all the time as well .as the generator warning light...
help Jim

Is your brake fluid low? I've had an issue before when the brake fluid was low the battery light came on and the alt stopped charging, I think it happens when the diode is faulty however I can't find the diode to replace it, I think it must be in the brake fluid cap/switch somewhere.

I had a similar thing when i had a loose battery terminal. I know its hard to get too, but can you put the voltmeter directly across the alternator instead of the battery, that will test if the alternator is faulty. If it is ok, check all your earths, and check your battery terminals are on tightly and clean.

I know it sounds simple but at least it removes some possibilities.

I have checked the volts output on the single large terminal and the volts are the same as battery volts 12volt with engine running ...that lead goes straight to positive battery terminal so would be the same reading of voltage ...is there a seperate voltage regulator or is it built into the generator itself ????
where do the other 2 connectors on the plug in lead on generator go to ?????go to ????
do not want to pay for a generator if its not faulty..
thanks Jim

Have you topped up the brake fluid?

I checked it by leaving the 2 terminal plug in situ running engine one lead of volt meter to earth the other on the large output terminal....reads as i say just 12 volts even revving engine up......should i perhaps short the 2 contacts from the plug in bit and measure again ?????? this would be difficult to do
as its hard to reach the plug in part on generator.......
thanks jim.....
PS BLOODY SITE MORE COMPLICATED THAN MY OLD ESCORT MK2

The voltage regulator is built in to the back of the alternator, but is removable and replaceable. Pull the alternator off and there are two screws on the back holding on the regulator, take that off and check there is life left in the the bushes.
