Grand Vitara 2001 1.6 intermittent fault

Hi folks,
I hope someone can shed some light on this problem.
I've had the car about a month. All good except occasionally and usually after a decent run when it's hot it would struggle to idle with the revs dropping down to about 4-500rpm,then after a moment would be ok again.. Then yesterday after a similar trip it cut out just as I was joining a busy thoroughfare. Only after pumping the gas several times would it start, and then it ran really very rough (like an old tractor) with slapping felt through the accelerator peddle. With pumping the gas and slipping the clutch (as there was virualy no power) the only way of moving forward. Luckily I was only a few hundred yards from home. This morning I asked my local garage to have a look as they are just around the corner. They say it started first time, ran in the garage for two hours then test driven with no issues. There were no diagnostic codes on the reader. They are suggesting it may be a faulty ignition coil but can't be sure unless it does it when at the garage. Any ideas?? Can sensor, CAT, coil?? It's had new plugs and fuel filter recently.
