Newbie here, please be gentle!

Sorry if I am asking stupid questions (I am very new to 4x4's, first one!)

I have just brought a Suzuki SJ413 Samurai, the previous owner has put a 3" lift kit with 30" Tyres on it.

He said it could do with the transfer box being adjusted, as it is standard.

I am going to be using this a Lot on the Main Road and want it to have good acceleration & top speed. The only Off-Roading it will get used for is going across the occasional field or two.

I would be very grateful of any knowledge you can spare me on how best to proceed.

You should be fine.

Standard is just about OK with 31s if you have a good engine so 30s and road use I wouldn't worry.

Its only done 43,000 miles, so the engine/gearbox is pretty sound.

I will try and a couple of extra Bhp by putting a performance air filter & getting a straight through exhaust system made for it.

I don't suppose you would know of anywhere I could get a performance Manifold/Downpipe?

The other option is to put a 410 transfer box on it as it has lower gearing, i had one on mine and it was a bit faster to accelerate but have just swapped it for a 413 one as i had to get a replacement and could not find a 410 one, bit more slugish in 5th gear now with that transfer box but i keep reminding myself that it has 31" tyres on and that its only a 1.3 haha.

That's good to know, I will keep that I mind and see if anything pops up on eBay :-)

I know most people end up changing the engine in these, I might end up going down that route in a year or two.

fair play, could always do a carb conversion on your 1.3 to a webber or a SU, or 1.6 vit lump etc

I would stick a 1.6 in over a diesel any day of the week
heavy and smelly! only benefit is the turbo sound effects

Also the 1.6 8v engine looks almost identical to the 1.3 so it still looks quite stock

1.6 8v Vitara are the best I suppose, lots of happy people out there running them in there sammi's.

I am really interested in the carb conversion idea, will that really make a noticeable difference in performance?
I will have to have a good look tonight and see what others have done!

I would it bolt-on job or would there be a lot of modifying? (I have a 1995 model)

You should have fuel injection already then if its a 1995 model.
If you do I would keep it injected and put a 1.6 injection engine in there.

Rhinoman is the best person to ask but I think you might have to use the 1.6 throttle body with the 1.3 ECU?
usually people convert to a different carb because the standard aisin carb has a crap choke that breaks and stops the car working

Injection is a better bet if it already has it. Set it up and then leave it alone, unlike carbs!

I had 31" on my old 413 and the power loss was immense, from a very quick little zook to a slug in one easy go. Still, it looked the pups...
