Gearbox whine 410 5Speed

Post by courior » Sat Jul 11, 2015 1:34 am

Hi all,

My gearbox has a loudish whine coming from it which twiss thinks is not that bad, but still. It sounds like a supercharger, a high pitched noise.. It happens in neutral, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th.. 4th gear is silent. Its a lot loud under acceleration than engine braking and u can hear it while idling/revving in neutral.. As soon as u press the clutch its silent. The pitch of the noise matches revs rather than speedo (indicating i think input/intermediate shaft rather than output).

So my questions are... From this info can anyone say which bearing in the gbox is making the noise.. and do the bearings need to be pressed onto the shafts/are they easy to replace without a press?

Cheers all!

Clutch release bearing is my guess if it goes silent when you press the clutch.

Never owned a zook that doesn't have that problem. Ignore it till it needs to be fixed, which will probably be never.

The old 4 speed was silent, so i think the flywheel bearing is ok. I got a feeling its the main "main shaft" bearing.. the one in the middle. the hardest one to change! .. i will swap back to 4 speed and rebuild the 5 speed box i think.
