Engine conversions?

My brothers sj is a bit gutless on 33s even with a vitara 1.6 engine and su carb and low ratio box so was wondering what the usual conversions are and also what has been done.
Ideally something light and plenty of torque so I was thinking along the lines at first of the 1.5 isuzu td engine they use to run in corsas but wouldn't be much of an improvement on power, a td would be nice to get the torque and reduce the chance of flooding an ignition system when wadeing.
The truck is heavily modified so no issues with modifying something to fit, I'd love a vw pd engine from a gti tdi 130 or 150 but have a feeling it may be a bit big and then there's the hassle of bell housing, I know they make them for a hilux box as I'm looking into it for my truck.

What diff ratios is he running?

I've got loads of usable torque/power on 33s with Vit 1.6, SU carb, RL T-Box, and 4.3:1 ratio ring and pinions.

If its still got standard ratio ring and pinions you should find that a change to a lower ratio is all that's needed.

Rock lobster box and 4.3s, we were running 5.125 but I blew the rear and it was under geared as well

Sounds like it needs a tune up or you have one very tired engine. It should pull fine with the 1.6 and that gearing, mine is on stock ring and pinions and it pulls fine. Yeah it's no sports car but it will cruise at 65-70mph all day long and get there easily enough.

what is your ignition timing set to?

what exhaust system are you running?

which needle and spring in the carb presuming it's a HIF44?

On stock gearing and oversized remould 31's (which are as big as my neighbours 33's) my 1.3 will get me to 70. Just about. Run around at up to 60 on B roads real easy.

With your gearing and 50% more HP/Torque than my 1.3 you should be pulling like a train.

To be honest as well, you don't really need a diesel as long as you waterproof electrical connections... I've had mine way over the bonnet in water before and a snorkel, a bit of vaseline and a plastic glove kept it running!
