In no way is this question relative to my samurai, the plan for her is a moderately modded yet still road friendly/ clean look. However, as so few "stock" samurais a hit the market (and when they do they're rusty as fuck) it's hard for me to see if there is any difference in the value between a nicely modded samurai and a good condition stock samurai? Just a random question I had today

Stock samurais can go for quite a bit of money if there is the right buyer and they are in literally mint condition.
But its all about when you sell and who is looking.

Problem with mods is that they can make the samurai more attractive to potential customers, but you will NEVER get back what you put in, unless you strip all the parts and sell them individually.

This is why scottie still has his blue SJ.... cos he wants what the truck and the parts are worth, yet theres not many people that will pay the full value

I had it up for under half what just the parts would cost.......let alone the 100s of hours labour/fabrication that has gone into it.

It all depends.....you can easily mod an SJ in a way that it's easy to put back to standard if you want. Stock ones do fetch good money nowadays.

But go as far as some people do and you will never get your money back.

Depends on the market and the buyer mate, I always buy standard vehicles because I dont trust someone else's work unless there reptile or I know them and still in very cautious.

Remember when top gear had that lacia stratos kit car and Jeremy Clarkson said "would you trust a kit car built by me? No".


As for the money side of things you rarely get back what you put in, even if you buy parts cheap the hours of labour alone cancel that out.

My truck sets me in at about £1000 but if I add the days spent on it , the hours spent on ebay gumtree etc, the miles ive drove to get parts etx I wouldn't want to guess.

To a lot of people a standard truck is a lot more desirable. A modified one even very very well done can put potential buyers off

I think a slightly more agressive tyre is about all you should consider if you're looking for maximum return on a Zuk - you'll never, ever make your money back on a highly modified vehicle, and Zuks are no exception.

I sold a mint samurai a couple of years back for £2500, if you get someone who remembered them from years ago and appreciates the vehicle they will pay good money for the right one.

Problem is with suzukis there usually two extremes when it comes to condition I've found anyway, even Kja's arnt worth what they where before now. So standard samurais and 410's especially early ones will be rising soon.

The term cult classic I think will be used with suzukis very soon, there all offroad toys and original ones almost stick out more don't they?!

Recently sold my Sami for 1850 which was the asking price and I could have sold it several times definitely, so underpriced a bit. It was good, rust-free, carb swap and a few bits sorted, but not mint. The kind of buyers were older blokes with fond memories and they don't want modded ones, but they do have funds as they see these as classics and value them accordingly.

I'm certain prices are rising properly now, driven by severe shortage of supply. Compared to many modest classics the SJ is a blinder - style, fun, very practical, easy to run and maintain, quite rare... By the time I am finished on my current 410 - in how many years - I bet it will owe me a lot and I don't care.

SJ's are getting rarer by the month.

The other day, just for fun, I DVLA'd every SJ number plate in the Suzuki 'How To Drive' YouTube vids, and in the 'SJ Enthusiasts Companion' book, everyone long gone now.
