Looking after my SJ, how do i check oil levels? (not engine)

Hi guys,

How do i check my gearbox, diff, transmission (and anything else?) oil levels?

I think I've got a leaking rear diff, so that's one thing that needs sorting, but I've also noticed that where the engine connects to the gear box(i think) it's leaking there a little as well. Last thing i want is to run out of oil anywhere and wreck the thing.

So I'm thinking, based on google's help, that i need to check both front and rear diffs, transmission oil & transfer case oil?

What's the transmission and what's the transfer case?

I guess the only way to check these is to drain them, measure, and replace with new oil?

Thanks from a completely noob to mechanics (i work in IT so i've got soft hands!)

Nothing wrong with working in IT ;)

Generally its quite easy, as the bottom edge of the drain plug hole is about the right level.
You just need a socket wrench, and it should fit in the square holes in the plugs for the diff, gearbox and transfer case
Diff ones are dead easy to get to.... the gearbox and transfer case have to be done from right underneath but are still do-able.

Undo the plugs and add gear oil until it overflows a tiny bit.

I would highly recommend a hand oil pump like this.

Makes the diffs easer, and I think you probably need it to refill the gearbox and transfer if they are still in the car

Transmission is yer gearbox filler hole on one side, when oil comes out of hole its full. Transfer case is yer 4x4 low high 2wd box, to fill is the same as gear box, but filler is at the back, I think or might be at the front :er:

Thanks guys, much appreciated advice.

Im just about to get some oil, based on the advice here (http://www.suzukiclubuk.co.uk/tech-spec ... -and-types) I'm looking at getting this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111894120349.

Is this suitable for all 4 things i need to check/top up?

Thanks again!

Personally if i was ordering it I would get 75/90 gl5 as per spec, but it doesn't really make too much difference.
