Hi all, sorry been away from here, busy but the 85 SJ going good, generally.
(This is a 2wd road condition)
Have a noise - at low speeds: take foot off accelerator but leave clutch engaged (so engine is braking a bit) - sounds rough, a bit graunchy. Drop the clutch and freewheel, all is calm, noise gone.
I have a guess there is excess rotational play somewhere in the drivetrain, and the noise is a sort of rotational resonance between engine and back wheels. I should check diff play and UV joints first I think.-?-
I'm tempted to start at the back and work forward - back axle/diff is 410. How much rotational play on the input shaft, anyone know the right amount or an acceptable tolerance please?
I'm pretty sure the gearbox and T-case are good.
Ideas and advice appreciated as always.

Re: SJ noisy final drive
Clutch release bearing is my guess. Given the noise goes when clutch is pressed.

I'll second that, mine was the same until I stuck a new clutch in.

Re: SJ noisy final drive
Possibly a uj? Does it do it when accelerating?
Would be a bit quick for the thrust bearing to fail unless its a faulty part.

Also, is it at any particular speed, rpm or in a certain gear?

Hi Andy - it's low speeds, in traffic or dropping from say 30 to stop. We put a new clutch in only about 1k miles ago (well, you did really !).
Fine accelerating, it's only when engine is acting as a brake, then disconnect engine (drop clutch), all fine again.
