Hi,
I would like to put an SJ410 transfer box on my 1991 SJ 413 as they have a lower gearing... Can anyone tell me if I should look out for a particular year or type? Do all 410 T'boxes fit the 413's? Are there any issues with prop fitting? (bolt spacing?) Any info from someone who has done this mod would be great!

no, not all types the very early 410 boxs (used with skinny props) don't have the 4wd selector switch, so avoid these but in fairness ive never seen one of these!

a fairly easy way of telling is to put the t-box into 4wd-low range, mark the input flange (with tip-ex or whatever) and the box so you can tell how far it has moved, do the same on the output flange/drum

now, when you turn the drum/output shaft one complete turn, bringing it back to the mark you made earlier, note how far round the input flange has moved. if its a 410 box, it will have moved about 2 1/2 turns, and if its a 413 box it will have moved about 2 1/4 turns. if you wanna get technical its actually 2.511 for a 410, and 2.268 for a 413.

hope ive helped, but personally i fitted a rocklobster box from the offroad armoury, in fairness its proboaly too low for me now!

I was looking at a 'rocklobster' box but I thought it was a little too extreme fabrication wise for me and my welder! Can you buy one ready built?? That would be what I would like as I am going to fit 31" tyres eventually as I love going over the rocky stuff but just can't go slow enough at the mo! I've looked at The Off Road Armoury website but it has very little on it... Is it a case of phone up and ask? I'm a little fed up with emailing companies and never getting a response so I would rather not email anyone!

If you get a 410 box and a 413 box there is a write up in the DIY page on the site, follow that, it doesn't look to hard, but i've not tryed it (yet) and there is a bloke on http://www.difflock.com/forum think its Nigel head, send both sets of gears to him and he does the difficult part!

I'm still a little weary of taking a t'box apart... Is there anyone out there who would do the work if I gave them the two boxes? Or even better as I can be rather lazy at times is there someone out there that would sell me a 'Rocklobster' t'box so I can just fit it? (fingers crossed!)

yeah ring up the bloke at offroad armoury, he speaks quietly on the phone but hes a nice bloke, he made mine up for me, I have heard since his gears arent as good as the difflock ones, But I have had no trouble at all with the gears or box that he sold me so i would happily recommend him!

also there is a bloke on difflock who makes boxs up, he is called 'rockwatt'......

If you don't mind me asking how much was the box from The Off Road Armoury? Was it a complete box that just needed fitting?

yes it was a complete box, he just asked for an exchange box, either a 410 or a 413 as the caseings can be used to build up another box, honestly i think it was around the £300-400 but im not entirely sure as it was around 2 years or so ago
