2004 Grand vitara 1.6 High Clutch Biting Point

The clutch biting point has always been high and if lowered it is difficult to engage first gear. The car has covered approximately 70,000 miles. Recently I fitted a new clutch assuming the biting point would be lower. However the biting point is still high. If lowered gear engagement becomes difficult again. I expect there is some other issue causing this problem. Does anyone have any ideas?
