i have the 410. i am thinking that i want a diesel engine. few people have told me that the vauxhall 1.7td is a good one to go for and someone else said the 1.8d escort one... ive read that theirs 2 or 3 sj's knocking about with a 1.9td engine from a peugeot... if i was looking for this sort of change to be done, what would i need?

gear box etc wise? anyone able to advise?

You will need the 406 engine.

A LDV Pilot gear box. This uses a hydralic clutch, so you will need to rig all that up.

On top of that you will need engine mounts, gear box mounts, some sort of lift to get the engine in...

i run escort diesel, it connects to a mk2 petrol escort gearbox. u will need to mod starter motor mount to get it to fit bell housing. also the clutch arm and exhaust manifold need modification.
i met a guy at the 4x4 indoor show earlier this year and he said he'd fitted a diahatsu 2.8 turbo engine and gearbox to his sammy with very little mod's. might be worth looking at as the diahatsu engine is pretty much bullet proof but the bodywork does rot so a few cheap 1's about.

cheers kev.

due to the torque and pulling power it has. also it is better coping with swimming than petrol engines i have been told

But then you have loads more problems like over heating, front end becomes very heavy ect

Why not go for the 1600 cc.

Yes you will need to change your box that will bolt straight in, and cut your engine mounts about a bit. But you get a larger light engine, that will have more dog and far far less work to fit?

Dont let me put you off derv, but my mate had the 1.7 astra. That was ok.. if you like very heavy engines, hard to source parts (gear box ect) and slow.. and boy did i mean slow. Another one of my friends has a 1.9 out of a golf. Thats good using the sj gear box. But its heavy... and likes to over heat.

might be slower henry, but we only use ours off road so speed ain't the issue. it is good fun watching people throw their petrol cars harder and harder at hills/mud etc then we come along and go through on little more than tick over, when i've got my rock lobster built it'll be even slower!!! love it !!!

cheers kev

That is quite true kev.

The 1.7 astra was ridiculous slow on the road!

I would love a diesel lump, red derv, and the wading! Love it!

However im happy with mine now. It will cruise at 60 and i can wade in it up to the top of the bonnet.
However i am a big diesel head! Have always loved the dervs, mostly in stupidly high horse powered tractor pullers that my stepbrother builds.
I even love me 1.3 td corsa... the turb whistles like a goodun on her!
