Engine problems

I tried to fire up my SJ today, but did not succeed.
It kind of started but sounded like it was only firing on 2 cylinders, and every so often air and fuel would fire out the top of the carb at high speed causing the engine to stall.
Im pretty sure its all connected up ok, the wiring was basicly guess work but i think its right.
Ant ideas would be appreciated

...put your foot down so the engine sucks harder?
If your carb's partly in bits try assembling it and attatching air filter stuff. I had a carbed vauxhall 1.3 from an Astra MK2 that my dad was making into a generator that wouldn't idle unless the air filter was on. Kinda seems backwards to me but that's how it was.

Iv tried all that im afraid Ed. If i give it full throtle it just cuts out, seems to be the same with the air box on or off aswell.
Im kinda thinking it might be the timing now. I set it up to fire cylinder 1 at tdc, but just read some where that it might need to be set to fire cylinder 4 at tdc.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. If the firing order's backwards that'd mess it up. It'd fire as the cylinder's just pushed everything out the exhaust and do nothing when the fuel and air are actually in the cylinder.
If that's the case and only 2 and 3 are firing then that's your 2 cylinders thing you mentioned earlier.

Cheers Edweird, all ideas are very much appriciated.
Iv got it running now
It was the timing. I adjusted the dizzy slightly and it started. Still sounds a bit rough but il get a timing light on it next week and get it spot on.

It seems to be running ok. It starts off ticking over about 2000rpm and then settles down to about 1000rpm (i assume this is the auto choke) and it seems to rev quite freely. The revs do hunt a bit on tic over. Im hoping getting the timing spot on should make it run a bit better. But i may also need to get the carb set up properly.
Im not around tonight Scott, probably wont be over there again untill the weekend now. I woundnt be surprised if some of the wiring was wrong, i just guessed it in the end

ah if it idles then it's wired up fine! If it's not the timing then the hunting could be to do with a vacuum pipe not sealing, what air box are you running on it? If it's the standard one then make sure the small vacuum pipe that runs from the underside of the airbox is connected to the inlet manifold at the front, just under and a bit forward from the carb, if any of these 3 small vacuum pipes are leaking or disconnected it can cause a rough idle and popping under deceleration. Check along all the connections of these vacuum pipes as well as they can often get disconnected. If you are not using the idle up system or standard air box then just bridge the 2 furthest back on the manifold with a small bit of pipe to seal them off.
Also make sure the pcv valve is connected to whatever air box you are using.

Yeah that could be part of the problem. Iv got the original air box but i just had it rested on top of the carb with out the vacume hose connected. Il hook that up and give it another try.
