16V Vit into SJ413 and on carbs

Post by v8disco » Sun Oct 24, 2010 7:52 pm

OK, my 16V Vit engine has arrived and I think I understand most of what is needed, but there are a couple of things I could do with some help on.

1. My plan is to carb it which will simplify things and also I can use some need adaptors I have to drop the carb height. Hopefully then I wont have bonnet clearance issues. It looks as if the thermostat housing is integral with the inlet manifold. Does that sound right? My plan was to do away with the whole manifold and injection hardware and farbricate a new manifold, but having to sort out the stat as well puts me off that idea.

2. Ignition. I would like to keep it nice and simple and not go mapped ignition. I figure I probably cant use the 16v distributor so does anyone know if the Vit 8v dist will fit the 16V? If so I can just use the 8V dist and coil and its easy.

3. Exhaust. I have read that the 1300 exhaust manifold fits the 1.6 8v but anyone know if the 8v and 16v use the same manifold. I know the 16v has a lambda sensor hole but that can be plugged easily enough. It would be nice if I could bolt the 1.3 ex manifold to the 16v head.

I just need to get the Rob Storr kit and a new clutch and we should be in business.

Cheers

Martin

Hi Mate

I have never done this myself however I can guide you to some threads on various forums that could help you work out what to do. the 8v and 16v heads are not the same so inlet and exhuast manifold are not interchangable.

:Warning: this might convince you to go quad gsxr carb and just for good measure i'll throw in a few more threads on the subject  It's the way i want to go on the 8v

Look on http://www.my-4x4.com in the mods section

This thread has loads of info, just takes a while to find it :D
http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,70640.1185.htoml

This thread you might need to translate but has some good info about fitting a 1.3 dizzy on a 16v head and making inlet/exhaust manifolds. Shuducks set up is bad ass! and sounds sweet!

The one has some good info on bike carbs, mostly onto an 8v head.
http://www.zukikrawlers.com/showthread.php?t=13944

On page 2 of this there is some useful templates for an intake manifold.

I'm sure i've seen more threads on the subject so i'll post them up when i find them again.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Scottie. There's some good stuff here - even the Norwegian. I understand a little Swedish so could get the gist of it.

I am pretty sure now that the 8V and 16V distributors are interchangeable so the plan is to drop an 8V dist in along with the little square
8v carb coil and that should be the sparks sorted.

Regarding the carbs, I've seen the bike carb conversions on a US website but I dont think i will go that way. The plan at the moment
is to modify a manifold I have that suits 2 x Weber 32/36. My brother is a brilliant fabricator who can do the cut and shut on the manifold
no probs (and also make me a wedge for the Vitara PAS) so I am fairly confident it will work. It also looks as if there are two water ports
on the head which will need to be incorporated in the manifold. These will then be joined and run to a remote thermostat. Thats the plan anyway.

The motor is at home now - heavy to get out of the car on your own - so will start stripping the EFI manifold and bits, along with the flywheel and clutch tomorrow. I've got a Off road armoury plate on its way - so hopw to get the engine in in a week or so.

Cheers
