No power

I was driving home from college today when the old girl stared spluttering intermittantly, and even died at one point, but only when was trying to accelerate at anything other that a sunday drivers pace. I had to nurse her up Motlash Hill (officially Mortal Ash hill, on the edge of Scunthorpe). I went through a really bad spot near home, where I could hardly get her to move under her own power at all. The throttle pedal didn't make much difference once I lifted the clutch. :S

Eventually after limping her home, I had a word with the old stepfather and we came to the conclusion that it was probably the fuel system as the problem was a little intermittant and I'd run the tank a bit low. I have since flushed out the fuel filter using a syringe to fill it with petrol and swill it out (the shit that came out of there  ) and have just got back from putting some petrol in the tank and all seems well now. I guess eventually I'll have to flush the tank or get a new one and I'm going to get a new fuel filter tomorrow as cleaning the old one seems to have cured the problem, though I couldn't check it out properly as mum went with me... :|

If you put a fuel filter in-line between the fuel pump and the carb you can see the fuel and it can help diagnosing fuelling issues.

It does also mean you get no warning if you're about to run out of petrol ;)

Well, all seems well after I cleaned the old filter out and gave her a full tank, so I picked up a new filter and I'll stick that on in the morning.

Good good! I know its hard not to when your young and poor but the best thing to do is try not to run into the last few litres of fuel in the tank, that way your less likely to suck up the crap floating around, if you over get a spare hour or 2 drop the tank drain it, filter the fuel, refill, flush, filter a few times and refit it just to get all the crap out.
