non starter..blowing thro carb?

hi there..i have just joined this site as i need some help!!i have just bought a sj..i got it home and it started twice...the following day i got it started once then couldnt get it goin again...it has been stood up for about 18 months...the starter is fine..it seems like there is alot of pressure backing up from somewhere and blowing out through the carb?any ideas wud be appreciated!!thanks.

Hi there... it might be worth taking the cambelt cover off and checking the cambelt hasn't slipped?
This can cause the engine to blow back out of the carb...

My mate managed to slip his cambelt a 1/4 way round the cam pulley, it was shooting 3 foot long jets of flame out of his SU carb :lol:

Oh it's relatively simple to do as well...

- Remove radiator fan shroud
- Remove radiator fan
- Loosen alternator
- Remove fan belt
- (Maybe) remove waterpump pulley
- Remove bolts from cam cover and take it off...
- Mark the belt position, mark on the camshaft pulley at the top, there should already be a marker on the engine
- Turn the engine over using a spanner on the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Once turned all the way round either 2 or 4 times, check the marks are in the same place. If not, probably a slipped belt

Yeah sounds like the timing is out somewhere for it to backfire out the carb.

Check belt as twiss mentioned.
dizzy. Check that the rotor arm is pointing at number 1 when number 1 is at tdc etc.
HT leads are in the correct order.

hey its bloody good of you guys to reply..thanks...iys a shame im not that mechanically minded..ive had a couple of people look at it and both have said its probably the timing...now can u get the timing right without a timing light?how easy would it be for me to do if i got a haynes manual?or do any of you guys live down this end and could have a look?im in cornwall...ive just bought the sj and cant even drive it..im keen as to get out and have a play!

timing isnt hard to do look in the haynes and timing lights dont cost that much, think i paid £15 for mine it makes life so much easier

Double and triple check you have the ht leads in the correct firing order. Mine was back firing through the carb and i checked the leads a number of times. Then i checked them one more time and i had 2 & 3 round the wrong way :oops: . (firing order 1,3,4,2)

Also some suzuki's are timed so cylinder 4 is at tdc instead of 1 (mine is done this way and so are a few other peoples). If so you need to put the leads in a different firing order 4,2,1,3. Might be worth a try.

As Robbie says timming lights are quite cheap, i got mine off ebay its pretty basic but it does the job.

Have you checked to see if the belt has slipped yet?

thanks again...i havent been and done anything on my sj today but im keen to have a go tomorrow with the help of you guys!!i have a timing light now and a haynes manual so i think i will have a go...would it cause any long term damage if the leads are the wrong way around?if i try a few different ways would it bugga it up?im looking forward to maybe gettin it started up in the near future and puttin sum pics up...when its painted!!thanks again.

no putting plug leads on in bthe wrong order wont do any damage the plugs will just spark at the wrong time

Even setting up the timing wrong wont do any damage as it's a non-interference engine. :thumbup:
