Air filter - Nikki carb just misses the bonnet

Post by Rjmaas512 » Mon Apr 18, 2011 11:45 pm

Hello,

I have a Nikki carb, and a 1.6 vitara engine in my LWB SJ. The air filter currently is the 5 - 10mm gap between the top of the carb and the bonnet.

Any ideas for an air filter? I can't drop the engine as the sump will hit the front diff/axle.

I plan to at a later date put an LPG mixer ring on-top of the carb as well.

My current plan is to cut the bonnet, increase the angle + height in the middle and paint/filler so it looks like it should go up that high. Will look better than a square hole cut out of the bonnet.

Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers,

Rob

Does your vit engine still have the vitara sump? If so you can get a 1.3sj sump and oil pick up, modify the pick up and run it on the 1.6 then you should be able to mount the engine a bit lower

Lots of people have this problem with badly designed SU adapters... there were some that wouldn't clear the bonnet...

You could put an air vent/air scoop thing over it? Or you could go about it differently and do a body lift ;)

I wish I could fit an air vent/air scoop thing over it... there really isn't that much clearance, although I will have a look on ebay and see what I can find. You never know, eBay always has something.

Lift could be a possibility, but probably not at this time. Maybe in the future.

If you're thinking about doing the sump , you will ideally need a 1300 sump and pick up pipe.... and a 1600 pick up pipe.

I already said that twiss  if he's got a 1600 he'll have a 1600 oil pick up won't he

Yeah true... I should have said you will need the oil pump end and the bracket from the 1600 welded onto the rest of the pipe from the 1300

I say bonnet scoop. Easy, simple and phunky.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

It will actually serve a purpose as well, unlike the bonnet vent you would need for an SU...

With the SU, the vent would purely be for the space to fit the carb... and cold air blasting the carb at speed can't help icing issues!
With the nikki, the air filter would be exposed to the vent... nice supply of fresh air getting in there!
