Hey folks. This spluttering thing's getting beyond an occasional annoyance, so I'm going to take my carb apart next Saturday and clean it all out, reset the float etc.

I know that some kind soul once posted a sequence of pics showing a 410 carb in bits for me, but I can't find that thread, so I was wondering if I could get those again. Also, if anyone's got any advice or useful pics/info that'd help, it'd be greatly appreciated.

She got worse than ever today on the way through Scun-thorpe after college, like cutting out completely before I could get to fourth most of the time. So I limped her into Morrisons then gave up and called mum for a tow home with her Discovery.

Took the carb to bits, cleaned it all out, rinsed, tapped and blew on the jets, put it all back together, filled up the bowl and she snorted back into life, took off at the same noisy gallop she used to do, got to the end of the road, turned right, got about 100 yards up the hill then she coughed and died again.

I've had enough!....

For one night at least.

I'm thinking tomorrow afternoon I'll take jets out again with the carb on the engine and try cleaning them again, along with checking the float adjustment.

If that doesn't work, new jets? If so where from?

i had this on mine with a webber carb, changed the filter kept cleaning the carb and it still wouldnt go.
i checked the filter and it had filled with crap and water
i went through a filter a week for about a month
the problem was the bloke who had it before me didnt use it much and id started raggin the arse off it and it just cleared all the crap out of the tank

Ah, that's possible. I could be trying to run on water, which would explain why she's not as bad on a full tank.

Pop the distributor cap off and grab your feeler guages, rotate engine using the bolt on the crank etc. to the point where the the points are open, this gap should be 0.4 to 0.5mm. Also check the condition of the contact surfaces, they should be flat and smooth with no pitting or burn marks. If they are damaged, buy some new points.

I would also buy a new condenser (the little capacitor looking thing screwed to the side of the dizzy) as these can also cause the above symptoms when they start to break down.

If this doesn't solve it then its time to drop the fuel tank, clean it out and fit a new filter

My stepdad mentioned a vaccum advance/retard hose, but the SJ doesn't seem to have one. What does it have, and could that be part of the problem?

Okay. I've taken the dizzy apart. Rotor arm and contacts to plugs looked a mess. Points were a little damaged, cam riding thing was damaged, inside was a bit mucky. We tried cleaning and filing the bits, reassembled and started it up. No change to the spluttering/cutting out; if anything worse.

Dizzy cap
Dizzy cap gasket
Rotor arm
Breaker
Condenser

Also, I still need an alternator bracket. Mine's broken, and I don't think my welds will last long as it's quite thick and it's only a little welder.

Sounds like the condenser is breaking down to me then, when they start to go they are fine when cold, that's why it would run when you first started it originally they are all cheap to buy so I'm sure it'll be good as new once sorted

Went down to my local A.E.Cooks this morning with my list and got everything over the counter save for the gasket, which they said wasn't on their EPC at all, so it probably comes with the bottom half of the dizzy.

I'll get it all put on when I get home and have another go.
