Not running right, don't have a clue why!
The problem started on Friday, this was the first proper run after fitting the new radiator. After about 4 miles the water emptied over the road. Once cooled I re-filled with water and took the SJ home. When I stopped the was a big back fire and steam come pouring out from under the bonnet.
I traced the water leak to a split pipe at the bottom of the inlet manifold. The problem is when I now start the engine there is a metallic grinding sound coming from somewhere around the carb/inlet. What worries me is that before the water emptied I got the same ticking noise as I got just before the head gasket went earlier this year.
Any ideas as to what could be wrong.

has your SJ been overheating lots? was that the reason you fitted a new rad? if so to me it sounds like you either had an airlock in the system or your head gasket has gone again or your head has warped/cracked from overheating a few too many times. when you last did the head gasket did you get the head checked for warpage and skimmed if it was warped? I would perhaps do a sniffer and compression test to check the head gasket.
As for the metallic grinding noise it's kind've hard to diagnose without actually hearing it. perhaps a video of it would help.

the rad was replaced because it had filled with sludge when the head went. and yes i had the head skimmed. I'll get a mate to do a compression check and try to get a video tonight.

so how many miles has it done since you did the headgasket last time?
just a thought but does the grinding noise sound like it's coming from the water pump? whip the belts off and check that it spins smoothly and there is no play. a failed waterpump could have lead to overheating and the water being spat out.

It's done about 250 miles on the new head gasket, and about 5 on the new rad.
I'll have a look at the water pump tonight.

I can't loosen the belt to turn the pump, but the pipe that split is from the inlet manifold to the pump, do I'm prity sure that that's the problem. Anyway here's the video of the sound.

is the bottom hose, metal part, touching the alternator pulley?

The alternator pully was hitting the clip on the metal part of the bottom hose, I just bent it round out of the way.ROBBIE wrote:is the bottom hose, metal part, touching the alternator pulley?
The water pump seems fine, it turns easy enough, I ran the engine with the cap off and there seems plenty of flow. hopefully the aletnator was stopping the pump from turning causing the pipe to burst. so touch wood all should now be fine.

so did the noise stop when you bent the clip?lazy rambler wrote:The alternator pully was hitting the clip on the metal part of the bottom hose, I just bent it round out of the way.ROBBIE wrote:is the bottom hose, metal part, touching the alternator pulley?

Yep, all seems fine now, I'll take it for a good drive on the weekend to see if it's still overheating. But I don't think a new water pump is needed.
