Mud / Off road tyres
Mud / Off road tyres
Hey Folks
Does anyone have any recommendations / experience of the following tyres? I have Marix Panthers on my SJ/Jago at present, but am after something that is a bit more suited to chalk quarry / muddy offroad use. I don't use the truck on road apart from to drive to where I offroad, so I'm ideally looking for an off road bias, which the below choices seem to be...
Tyres at present are 235 75 15's, and I reckon i'll stay that size rather than 31's as it negates a change from my 7x15 modulars, unless 31's will give me a significant advantage? The truck already seems a bit overgeared... It uses SJ 413 Samurai running gear. I have no clearance issues, and 31's won't cause any... Road noise isn't an issue either
The tyres i've narrowed it down to are:
Malatesta Kobra Trac NT
Kumho KL71
Insa Turbo Special Track
Anyone able to help me? Or have any other recommendations please?
Cheers,
Mike

I raced my SJ on 235 KL71s for a couple of races, grip was very good but they lacked bite in the corners. The truck oversteered a bit much for my liking. I swapped to BFG 215s and the rear gripped much better. However I must say that in more normal use I would have no problems, it was only the high speed stuff where they were lacking.

Re: Mud / Off road tyres
i have 31x10.5 sahara's and find them to be superb.
mainly used on the ridgeway (which is mainly flint/chalk in my area) and pay and play which are mainly clay.
also used them for about 800 road miles with little wear and drives ok
my only complaint would be that they very occasionally clog with clay but only in the really really sticky stuff.
plus they are cheap

Re: Mud / Off road tyres
I love the sahara and the kl71 tyres so much... because of their road handling...
If it's off road 90+% of the time, I would get special tracks ANY DAY OF THE WEEK

Re: Mud / Off road tyres
Will the Special Tracks handle green lanes and tracks ok too? Would I benefit from going upto 31s? I'd like to keep the Marix tyres I have on the rims so I can use them if it gets mega icy again

Re: Mud / Off road tyres
i fitted my lift and 31's at the same time so cant really say what made the difference but since the 31's went on I have rarely been properly stuck.
depends how much time you are going to spend driving in ruts i suppose as that is where the extra diff clerance really counts

Yeah you just don't want to be driving long distance on the road, or for lots of regular road journeys...
