Need new transfer box?

Post by Rjmaas512 » Sat Sep 10, 2011 12:36 am

Driving my Sj at the moment. Have a feeling I need a new transfer box.

I get a hell of a whining sound from the car when I drive in 5th year between 30 and 65. Its really loud at 65 but I'm used to it.

Have a feeling my transfer box might need to be replaced.
What would be the best thing to do? Strip it down and replace the insides, or install a new one.
Is there any way to tell that it is the transfer box before taking it off or is there only one way to find out. Try a new one?

Thanks,

Rob

I personally would get another one, then rebuild and keep your current one as a spare!
It's not really advisable, but when I'm double checking where noises are coming from, I sometimes take the rear wheels off, jack the rear axle up onto axle stands, then put it 2wd in 5th, this way all of the gearbox, t-box and rear axle's shafts are spinning and you should be able to get closer to the noise!
Be very careful though!

Please make sure it's in 2wd!
I will not be held responsible for any Sj vs house incidents! ;) :P

I will be murdered by mum if the SJ ran into her toyota on the driveway.

Will be extra careful, would be a rather costly mistake to make.

I don't think it will unless you want to make a custom mounting for it, In reality SJ t boxs are alot stronger than the jimmy ones as jimmy tboxs are chain drive instead of geared

Where are you located? I have a 413 t box that I bought but never used, it doesn't have any flanges (but you can swap them off your old box) when I bought it I bought it ad a doner for a rocklobster but bought a made up on instead, I think one output seal was damaged but can't remember now
