(Aust) Verm1n's LJ81 build
thought I would put my build up in here seeing as I just started it
Well where do I start.. I bought an LJ81 for $1250 aus 'about 820 pound.... I BELIEVE'
I got 1 and a half utes... Basically a brand spanking new cab with doors to go onto the chassis which has the rusty cab
I stripped it down to a bare chassis and painted it.. The modified the engine mount to suit sierra steering as well as a 3cylinder
2 stroke engine from a LJ50 from here... Haven't done much as I got another Samuarai ute 'which is being parted out'

Man I'm envious I love LJs and they are sooo rare here!
If it was me I would restore one with the LJ chassis (good tub) and then build the samurai chassis up with the other Tub, that way you have one classic that is pretty much factory spec and another that you can mess around with and not have to feel guilty about modding a classic

I did think about building it relatively stock mate
but I have 2 many cars atm :( soo Trying to limit them down..
In the yard atm.. I have 2 samurai's, 1 lj81 and a ta22 celica
N most of under the house and my little 3x3 shed is full of spare parts bahaha

quick update.. The sierra ute cab is off the chassis.. I have drawn up a few sketch on the difference between the samurai and Lj chassis.. My original plan was to cut the floor out of the lj and raise it up like the samurai floor. This is so it will clear the samurai transfer case, g/box member and the middle mounting blocks.. Talking to my Brother 'Colin' who has already started this project on his.. 'his build has now stopped due to other cars.. *his road car a vw bettle*' He thought of another way which I am going to try which I modifing the chassis instead of the cutting the floor entirely out of the LJ..
Soo my plans are to cut the middle mounting blocks out along with the g/box member and seeing how much the transfercase hits on the floor.. from there I will make a new g/box memba which goes between the chassis and not above... I will have to cut and raise a piece of the floor under the drivers side where the trannycase sits for clearance to the Lj body.. From here I then have to extend the front cab mounts wider about 50mm/2inches . I also then have to cut the rear cab mount off, make a new one and move it forward on the chassis 'cab is smaller in size compaired to the samurai..
I will try to upload pics as I go

I think I may be having second thoughts of putting it onto a sierra chassis as I don't wanna cut the good cab up mod the floor and the tunnel to fit the gearbox.. hmm any thoughts??

use the old rusty cab, it doesn't look like its beyond saving in the pic above, I agree it would be a bit of a waste to cut the floor out of the good one.
I would still do what I said above restore the yute with the good cab and have a play with the rusty one

I'm so jealous! I love LJ's I'm proper LJ broody, I'd like a 2stroke one but finding any is lucky! If they were both mine I'd want to restore them both to stock but I'm a bit wiered like that!

haha ur crazy Well it seems I have a heart the shit cab was beyond repair... 'wasting my time' so I gave it away... well been a few weeks.. had an exam.. soo haven't done too much.. besides study.. Sooo I have now decided NOT to build it on a samurai chassis.. I really didn't want to wreck such a nice cab.. I also have decided that I m going to make custom LJ 1.3 diffs so I can fit airlockers down the track.. yaye.. umm.. well where to start.. Its been just ova a day since my exam and I have a completely stripped LJ81 chassis and painted it.. repainted 2 stockman housings with 4.1 ' 1ltr samurai' diffs.. fitted the rear springs with drop shackles ' illegal' and drank.. a carton of rum.. high 5
