Rear Brakes

Hi just recently did the shoes on my samurai 89. 1.3 model.

Then pads went in fine on both sides, but one or both of them seem to be slightly sticking.

I have tried to adjust that rachet type wheel - to fully out. Where the gap appears to be pulled back to its furthest point.

But still tight getting the hub back on - just scrapes over the pads.

Any ideas?

Hi graham. Iv recently overhauled my rear brakes. I didn't replace everything I should have but gave things a general clean up and service.

Make sure there is no lip on the inside of the drum

Check the handbrake linkages move. There is a linkage behind the back plate and one hidden behind one of the shoes just after it goes through the back plate (through the rubber gator) both mine were solid and requires fully stripping to access.

If the springs are old they might have lost there tension and will not pull the pads back away from the friction surface of the drum. This causes the pads to drag and will wear out faster

The shoes them selves are self adjusting its the handbrake that is adjustable on the ratchet. Back it off completely do it up a bit at a time until they are close enough but do not bind

Once built up operate the foot brake a few times to help the shoes settle

Thanks Cristoff, its prob a case of getting out there and actually pulling the wheels off again, rather than writing on forms id say!

But I dont have a lift so its a bit of a bitch.

Yeah it's a ball ache having to take the drum off all the time to get it right. Jack the rear end up from under the diff

In fact you don't need to unbolt the wheel, remove the 4 bolts from the half shaft and remove the wheel and drum in one ;).
