welcome to the club
the main problems are rust rust and rust the rot bad
check in the front footwells for hole near the bulkhead and behind the seats also the rear floor rusts a bit and the rear wheel arches
check engine oil for any scum etc the common knocks and rattles go up and down all through the gears aswell as going up and down in the transfer box
play in the steering pretty easy to fix though etc
check for the play in the props etc
what i say if the is a button push it , if there is a knob pull it
but im sure some other member might give a better list then this

Hi and welcome to the club. To be honest you just need to find one with the least rust/rot,the mechanicals are quite good and can be easily fixed/replaced when they do fail. To cut out the rust and weld in new steel takes a while and if you can't do it yourself is expensive.
Hope you find a good one.

to the club.
Have a read of some of the build threads on here and see what members are replacing/repairing... Look at rear arches under the plastic cover and from inside, sills from underneath as well, bulk head around the windscreen, lift carpets if there fitted and inspect for rot and if you find one on ebay that you like message the seller, let him know your interested and ask to view.. Chances are he wont sell it if he's got you interested and coming to see it. You could end up doing a deal for cash there and then. Take someone with you to view.
Also if you do bid and get outbid, message the seller that you are still interested if the winning bidder lets the seller down as there's a million numptys on ebay bidding for stuff they don't want/can't afford. Seems like some SJ's sell two or three times on ebay because of idiots
There's a few real experts on this forum that will be able to give you loads of info, just post up links of what your looking at and ask "What do you think of this?".

HI and
Think pretty much everything has been covered.
Regarding the rust... you wont find one for sensible money without any at all.
I don't know about other garages but the one I took mine to for its MOT was only really interested in seeing that the area behind the seats were solid for the seatbelt mounts.
Also try to avoid shackle lifts if you can as its a sure fire route to new springs down the line.
