Twiss' 16v engine thread

Well,

I thought I would actually do a thread about the 16v engine so here goes!
I got the engine off Tim Pink, who had already done a lot of the work to put it in!!!

He's already modified a swift manifold to fit with an SU...

... and modded the distributor housing to take a standard Sammy dizzy...

Noticed yesterday that the engine is fitted with an oil cooler attachment, so it looks like I will end up running an oil cooler! :)

I've just cleaned the engine up so far, but the first thing I have noticed is that the engine is originally from a horizontally-opposed-engine-car... so the top radiator hose pipe comes out the back of the engine...
I popped down the scrapyard and found the perfect connector, as the samurai one is about 10mm too big!

As you can see, the one that was on it points straight back into the bulk head, and the one I've put on it now points out to the drivers side :)
For future reference, I nabbed the connector from a 1000cc Suzuki Alto GL

Now I've also taken off the viscous fan. I've got an electric fan anyway so don't need the viscous one on there any more!!!

Small update, no pics yet but I will add them tomorrow probably!

Put the distributor on!

For those that don't know the proceedure:
Make sure the engine was on top dead center (tdc).
Rotated the engine with a spanner, finger over the spark plug hole, until it started pushing air out past my fingers. This ensures its on the exhaust stroke.
Poked a long thing into the cylinder through the spark plug hole until it touches the piston.
(I used a cable tie to get it approximately right, only because I couldn't find a bit of dowel. The 16v has recessed spark plug holes so you would need a really, really long screwdriver to reach the piston.)
Turned the engine until the long pokey thing is as far up out of the cylinder as it can get... This is Top Dead Center

Installed the distributor into the housing with the rotor arm pointing at HT lead 1 (should be marked on the cap, and at the top)

Voila! I will still need to time the engine accurately with the timing light once its in and started up!

I'm disappointed I'd have thought you would have painted the block by now......
:P Scotty would have, but then again it would have probably taken him 6 months :lol:

I dont think I will paint the block tbh

I might paint the rocker cover though.... I was thinking either a black or a red one, with the letters ground down a little bit so they are nice and shiny!

There's no point in painting aluminum blocks IMO, they don't rust :mrgreen: I'm getting an aluminum rocker cover for my sj now as well, I might have to polish it :lol:
