With the front end removed from my sammy i decided to look at the timing belt because i never looked at it when swapping the engine, but since i have no idea of the Donor vitaras mileage or how well it was service i think a timing belt swap would be best done:

up close it doesn't look like the worst timing belt I've ever seen but there is some fraying round the edges and the printing is wore off on the back, whats a good brand of timing belt to use, is it best to replace the pulley aswell?

It all looks in quite good nick under there :D I can't remember what kit I used but in my opinion if you don't know the service history its always good to get a new belt and tensioner. Not that it matters if you break a timing belt in these engines though as they are a non interference design

Yeah cambelt is a roadside repair job :)
Gotta say it looks much better than the 1600 8v I've just taken out of my truck!
Get a bucket of black, used oil and chuck it over the top.. then you're similar to my engine lol

I didn't know these were a non interference engine, that makes them even more indestructible :D.
Its a clean enough engine, the vitara i got it from didn't come from the seaside like all the others I've ever bought so the engine wasn't covered in various bits of marine biology, and it also got a bit of a cleaning when it was out the last time.

Is any of them ebay kits good enough or should i get one from a motor factors?
