1.6 vitara 1997 3dr fuel economy.

Post by stevenpossett » Tue Feb 21, 2012 8:50 pm

Ok, thinking of moving to one of these, just wondering what sort of fuel economy i can expect, specifically in relation to a standard 1ltr 410 engine.

Cheers, Steve.

I don't really think there's much in it really, I used to run a stock 410 and saw 25-28mpg on 31" tyres.

The same Sj with a 1.6 8V on 33s and 2 transferboxes and I get around 20-25mpg depending on how its driven.

However when the same engine was still in the vitara on standard tyres it was definetly a bit better on fuel I just never worked it out.

A '97 model might be fuel injected as well... these ones seem to get better economy than the carb ones
Don't get an auto vitara whatever you do!

My 1.6 8v (not any more!) SJ isnt great around town on fuel, but I used to get around 28-30mpg on the motorway!

If it's a fuel injected 1997 Vitara, you might be able to get as much as 35 or even 40mpg, if it's carb'd, you're looking at about 30mpg.

And copying the previous comment, don't get an automatic. The torque converter sucks power, and it's only a three speed, so you don't have much of a cruiser gear.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.
