Hi and welcome to the club. The only thing I've ever heard of that fits your description is this hole blowing next to the fuel pump. Nothing screws in it, it's capped off.

It's a port for an EGR system that was not fitted on the carb'd models, it's supposed to be blanked off but whatever plug they use from the factory never seems to last.

I did a quick fix with some exhaust putty and was intending to use some sort of aluminium epoxy filler as a permanent fix but the exhaust putty has been there for a few years now and remained sealed so I just left it as is.

I had a sort of similar issue when I converted to the 1.6 8v engine.

On my 1.6 engine there is a hollow tube in the engine at the back underneath the fuel pump.
I think it's originally supposed to pre-heat the carb, but where I had a different exhaust manifold I just got a manifold blowing noise coming from under the fuel pump.
Quite worrying cos it sounds like blowing, but also sounds like its inside the engine, as well as overheating the engine gradually!

Same as Scotts fix, jammed a load of exhaust putty in the extra hole in the manifold, problem solved :)
