Oil leak

Post by donkeychomp » Tue Mar 06, 2012 4:41 pm

It's the Exxon Valdiz all over again.

Checked the fuel pump and dizzy, no leaks there. Got underneath the beastie and it seems to be coming from a cracked plate at the bottom of the gearbox, just above the end of the sump.

I can twirl a spanner or two but this is beyond me I think.

Anyone know of a decent 'bars leaks' additive that might seal this up?

I have oil coming down that back of the engine too but it's not bad enough that I have to top up between oil changes, so I just left it as was.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Try tightening up the sump bolts very gently as they are small and snap easily if that doesn't stop it get a new gasket for the sump and try that.

If that doesn't stop it then it could be the rear crankshaft oil seal and that's a gearbox out job, still not hard to do though!

I always use a small 1/4" drive as you can't put as much force on it that way

It's the oil seal. I can't do that myself, just not good enough.

The anus is my only car and as a carer I need to use it every day.

At a bit of a loss now...can't pay for it to be fixed, guess I'll drive it till it goes pop.

Thanks all here for your help and info, if anyone wants to buy 'Piglet' she'll be on ebay soon enough, with a mullered engine.

Alex where are you?

I know I'm probably about a million miles away from you but I would do it for you.

Maybe someone nearby could help you, its not a difficult or complicated job to do.

If its your only car and you need it, then driving it till it breaks doesn't seem the ideal solution.

To put it simply.

Remove little prop between gearbox and t-box.

Release clutch cable.

Unplug reverse light switch.

Remove 2 bolts holding starter on and hang out of way.

Remove gear gaiter and remove 3 bolts holding shift lever into box

Undo 2 bolts holding bar under gearbox.

Undo 2 bolts in rear gearbox rubber mount.

Undo 4 bolts holding gearbox to engine.

Lift down and out of way.

Remove clutch and flywheel.

Replace seal.

Reverse of above.

If you can change a wheel you can drop a gearbox

It's honestly not hard, no point selling up for such a simple problem!

Yeah if you're around my area I'll give you a hand for some beer tokens ;)

I'm sure out other spanner happy members will help you out as well! :)

Taking your gearbox off is dead easy! The only specialist tool you may need is a clutch alignment tool but they are cheap and easy to get hold of!

I once swapped a box and rebuilt both my axles in a day (in 6" of snow) just so I could go out and play in the evening!
I'm not a mechanic by any means, I'm in IT for gods sake! ;)
