URGENT...somethings jammed!
Basically I took the rear drums off to check and adjust the rear shoes. Upon doing everything up, I've then moved the car forward and its jolting violently. I moved it back into the garage and un did the rear prop the rear diff turns fine.
Next I took the input shaft off and both the gearbox and transfer box turned freely, but as soon as I join them back up, it turns a little and jams. I've tried both 2wd and 4wd, all by hand with the rear jacked up and its the same.
What's happened?!
It was fine driving the 20 mins on the road beforehand, in 2wd
Please help!

Could it be something weird like you got the shaft on the wrong way?
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Nope as it messed up from just taking drums off and not touching the props before hand

Re: URGENT...somethings jammed!
Ive removed the transfer box and it selects 2H 4L and 4H all perfectly and rotate the correct pulleys fine and at the correct speed so that makes me think the transfer box is fine.
It seems to jam as soon as I reconnect the input shaft, and try to move the vehicle, its like its forcing it to move and jolts badly :( It seems to be the front end, as I removed the rear prop and it still happened. This all happens with the hubs in freewheel mode!
Its the same in reverse too, and jolts.
The gearbox rotates fine when its not connected to the trans box.
I cant understand how its just "happened" all from me undoing the drums. Admittedly I did rotate the rear wheels a bit in both directions while they were jacked up and in 2wd mode.
Also another thing is when the trans box is in "neutral" should I be able to let the clutch up with the gearbox in 1st and have nothing happen at all? As it still makes the joltyness happen like its trying to drive. However upon removing the trans box, it selects neutral fine and neither pulley moves when rotating the input pulley.
Can someone please give me some answers as soon as possible Im new to this 4x4 business, but have a good understanding of how not to wind the transmission up etc

Have you had the sliders in your props apart? It sounds like you could have slid the sections back together and not lined the uj's up properly both need to be in matching positions or it binds and stops it rotating cleanly, there is a picture out there some where but can't be bothered to find it

Re: URGENT...somethings jammed!
No, Ive not had the props apart, just disconnected. But NOT before It started jamming up.
Ive just found the article on the selecter mechanism as it happens, could this be the problem?

The only thing is, could that have happened due to what Ive done and effectively "winding it up" by hand? Sounds very similar. Would it only show itself under load? As it seems to rotate fine when off the truck and disconnected from everything

Re: URGENT...somethings jammed!
When you say you adjusted the rear brakes what exactly did you do, as these self adjust
With the gearbox in neutral and the handbrake off can you still push it.

Both rear wheels turning freely?
I know you said the rear diff turned freely but if one wheel is locked the other would still turn.
maybe a brake jammed on?

Re: URGENT...somethings jammed!
The brakes have always been a bit rubbish and pedal travels a lot. I turned the adjuster wheel inside the drums, especially the nearside, there was barely any friction going on. This is a temp measure until I replace the shoes. I'm guessing this sides self adjusting mechanism is seized?
I didn't try that to be honest but will tomorrow.
The thing is the ONLY thing I touched was the wheel nuts, the drum securing nuts, and the adjuster wheel inside. That's it. And straight after it was jolting and jamming up....all I can think was that rotating the rear wheels while jacked up caused a problem.
Yes both wheels turn freely in both directions with the prop disconnected.
