No idea about the Maestro gearbox, but I think that the Cavalier engine would go in with a Carlton gearbox.

comming from a person who dads has a vauxhall cavalier , im going to say vauxhall cavalier engine by a long mile :smokin:
them engines are like made from cast iron then wrapped in a titanium glove, in other words i think there bullet proof ;)

My opinion is stick with the petrol, the lightweight petrol engine is what gives the SJ an advantage in the rough, as you add the diesel sj's get too front heavy and start sinking, my advice is stick with the light weight petrol, the 1.6 is perfectly adequate for 99% of stuff you can throw at an SJ

I agree with tramp the main advantage of a sj is how lightweight they are. people have put diesels in them but I've never seen one personally so cant advise which is best

I agree, diesels are much heavier than petrol. If you're desperate for a different engine though, again I'd recommend Vauxhall. The X20XEV 2 litre Ecotech has more than enough power and torque to drive an SJ until the UJs break, plus you can get as much as 45 to the gallon if you're gentle when they're at home in a Cavalier/Vectra. You'll want a Carlton gearbox the that too.

not sure if a diesel pump will work with a petrol engine?
