Misfire

Post by charger » Tue May 22, 2012 7:34 am

Did some general maintenance & replaced my plugs, the one second to the end nearest the bulkhead I think has a misfire as the engine tick over does not alter if it's connected or not, could new leads sort this or could it be more serious?

Swap plug lead 3 for plug lead 4 to check the lead is ok

If the engine still sounds the same change plug 3

Its not unknown for new plugs to be dud

I'm no mechanic so I guess I'd start by making sure the spark plug gap is correct (0.7-0.8mm) then with all the HT leads numbered with matching numbers on the distributor so they're not mixed up, swop the suspect lead with a known good one and see if the fault moves to the new cylinder. When removing the HT leads pull them off from the rubber boot, not the actual lead as you might damage the lead internally.
Hope this helps-I'm sure some expert advice will be on hand very soon

I had a engine that had a misfire on number 2 cylinder that no one could diagnose tried new plugs , leads, rotor arms and dizzys. Tried swapping leads from one plug to another and nothing :er: Pulled the head off and put a different one on still nothing :bawling:

Replaced the engine that sorted it

It could be dizzy related maybe? perhaps a new rotor arm and cap could be worth as shot?

So plug 3 still isn't sparking?

Have you physically removed it and checked that it doesn't spark by touching it against the engine block while turning the engine over?

If its not sparking and you have replaced the plug and lead then next step as Scottie suggests is the distributor cap and rotor arm.

If the other plugs are sparking ok then it can only be either or both of these that are causing the problem
