Damned fuel issues

Here is a brief run down of the annoying problem I've been having!!!
Got the SJ through its MOT last month, but after I stuck some fuel in it (previous fuel was in it for about 8 months) it stopped running and couldn't suck any fuel from the tank.
After lots of tweaking with the fuel system (new filters, moving fuel pump, new fuel lines) I found that the fuel tank pickup pipe had a tiny crack in it and was just sucking in air.
I only found out when I moved the pipe a bit and it snapped straight off!
Anyway, I got a new fuel tank and have installed it. All connected up properly and working fine. Fuel pump is now sucking fuel down the pipes and into the carb.
Got it sort of running today and have noticed that the carb (SU HIF44) is pouring fuel out of the needle seat. It's where the fuel is supposed to be coming out, just in ridiculous quantities!
So basically I've sucked some crap out of the tank and into the carbs float bowl, so now I have to take the carb apart and clean it out!!!
The moral of the story...
a) don't leave fuel in your tank for ages!
b) if you do leave fuel in the tank, put fresh fuel in, then siphon it out, filter the junk out of it and then put it back in!!!
... and to top it off I've flattened the battery trying to start it, so now I have to wait hours for the battery to recharge!
Oh well!
