8.1 Transfer Case Gear Set???
Looking for some 8.1 transfer case gears. They used to be available in the US about 1 1/2 years ago at Lowrange Offroad. They have since stopped selling them.
Was doing some research last year to see if there was a place to still get them. They are supposed to be made in the UK and have not gotten anything else on them
Thought since I’ve been posting here for a bit now would ask for a little help.
Here goes:
Is there such a gear set being made here?
If so has anyone got the name of the merchant?
Does anyone have any first hand info on the quality of the 8.1 gear set?
The case has to be modified for the 6.5 TCG to fit, is there enough meat in the case to clearance for the 8.1 gears without making it too weak?
Thanks for the help

This is the guy you want Terry
http://www.rsmfg.co.uk/page32a.html
I believe he was the guy who used to supply the US with them? He can be a bit hard to get hold of and take his time to ship them out but his gears are some of the best available, if not the best available!
I don't know anyone running the 8:1s but I've never heard of any of his gears failing.

Re: 8.1 Transfer Case Gear Set???
Thanks Scott,
I thought that I would be hearing from you if they were still able to be found.
Was looking into them because of the 24percent reduction in high. The 6.5 only have a 20 percent and I was told that I may not be able to use 5th gear with the 529's and 6.5.
This will mostly see the highway and thought that the 8.1's would help with that and also
get it rolling and not have to feather the clutch so much. Using the center force clutch in the big one this time around. Really don't have anything good to say about the petro works clutch that everyone talks so highly about.
Those gears are pricey and shipping will probably a killer with all that weight. I will be needing something shortly thats why I was asking about the 8.1's
If anyone has any 1st hand experience with the installation of the 8.1 gears. Please feel free to post the info. Even the smallest amount of info is always valuable.
Thanks again Scott

If its only mainly for the road and with such big tyres why not use different diff gearing to get that reduction for a fraction of the cost?

Re: 8.1 Transfer Case Gear Set???
Well Dan that really wasn't my question but I will answer yours for you.
I have the 529's (as was mentioned) which are a very large set of gears the next size is 571's when you start getting that big the out diameter of the gear teeth get thinner and you will be asking for trouble IMO.
The cost for a front and rear set of new gears is not cheap either. I don't stick used parts in and hope for the best just to go the cheaper route. Not that lucky and usually costs me more money and agrivation in the long run.
When it takes so long to do a complete build and money involved the parts that I had thought about using sometimes are not available any more when the time comes to get them. This has happened to me on a couple occasions and the 8.1 TCG happens to be one of the parts that I was able to get at one time in the US.
I will be posting on a couple other sites asking for any info on the 8.1's and then I will make my decision on which gear set to buy.
Guess it is kind a of why there are more flavors of ice cream then vinalla. Just a personal choice for me.

Re: 8.1 Transfer Case Gear Set???
Sorry didnt pick up on that bit. Kind of hard to understand the post when its just a series of numbers. I was just trying to understand why you coudnt adjust ratios elsewhere but google reveals you have obviously already swapped diffs.
Maybe in the future you could say 5.29 diffs or transfer box or gear box or whatever ratio you are refering to for some of us that might not know what a "529" or a "571" is.

Re: 8.1 Transfer Case Gear Set???
Well guys glad that you got a laugh, sorry that you were so confused. LOL
I think that there is just a bit of a difference in the language references from the UK to the US. I also have a great deal of trouble trying to figure out what some are saying in their threads over here but don’t complain about it.
I don't even know what some of the things are that you want me to add to a post. LOL
What was posted is what we use for ref to specific components. Guess that you would call it short hand I will try and do a better job when posting a question for some help. This way those that can actually help won’t be confused.
With all that said and now you understand what I was talking about. Do you have something of value to contribute? LOL
