SJ410 engine swap.

Hi every one. Common question asked on here I know but I was wondering what's the easyest engine swap I can give my 1986 SJ410. I'm not looking for immense speed although a little more then it's got would be nice. I use it for driving round feilds for shooting, but tracking between permissions can be a pain because it's just so slow.
Also what am I going to need? To convert from a 970cc to another engine. I.E gearbox, etc.
Huge thanks
Alex

Hi,
There aren't really any engines you can just drop into a 410. You can use a SJ413/Samurai gearbox and a 1.3 or a 1.6 engine, but you need to adjust the gearbox mounting crossmember to fit the different gearbox.
Once you have done that though, you can go for 1.3 8v (carb/injection), 1.3 twin cam (swift engine), 1.6 8v (carb/injection vitara engine) or 1.6 16v (vitara again)
I would say if you're gonna do it, might as well put a 1.6 engine in it straight away

Thanks for the reply. So I'm guessing it's best to take the 1.6 engine, gearbox and clutch from the same vehicle? Sorry for the stupid question, this is the first time iv ever attempted somthing like this

Well if you take the vit gearbox as well as the engine its a bit more complicated because it has the transfer box built in.
I personally would use a samurai gearbox and a vit 1.6 8v engine.
Good balance of easy/power
If you are interested in putting a vit gearbox in check out scott's build thread

Sorry but I cant remember what page the best pics of it are on

Only if you have an early 410 with skinny props, the later ones gearbox crossmember is in the same position as 413s and Samurais

Or if you currently only have a 4 speed box swap to a 5 speed for slightly better road use.

The simple answer is no, it will need new engine mounts, a 413 gearbox, adapter plates (for diesel) and probably other custom bits made.
A 1.6 8v vit engine is the easiest but will still require a 413 gearbox, 413 flywheel, 413 clutch, custom engine mounts, possible a 413 sump and oil pick up pipe mod + maybe some other bits.
As for the suspension, converting to coil suspension is a conversion that needs to be done by a professional or experienced fabricator and will require an IVA test (£450 if you pass!) to be 100% road legal.
Easiest thing to do is to fit some lift springs and decent shocks
