What is the canister at front rt of engine

Um.. Unfortunatly the black canister on the right side (off side in uk) of the engine which obviously takes a rubber hose has no hose fitted on my 99 santana vit 3 door soft top jx. The engine is a 1.6 8v.
Some similar models have two hoses fitted in the top but mine only has one pipe .. Does anyone have a pic of the single hole model and where os the pther end attached... Could this be the reason for a fast idle 2k revs aprox.

Sounds like the charcoal canister which is to do with the emissions/fuel tank breather. All the ones I know of have 2 pipes though

Errrr.. Just discovered it has been inverted .. That is why there is one hole.. How stipid can one get and still get a licence to drive!! Now the question is should I turn it right way up? It is the charcoal canister which takes the fumes from the tank I think.. What goes on the bottom single pipe..

I can't find any diagrams showing a hose connected to the bottom pipe. It's shown as an air intake so I assume it has no hose. I assume the small amount of air intake is filtered by the canister

Job done guys.. Thanks again.. Bottom of cannister is now open to air and pointing to ground.. CEL is code 12 all systems good.
What do you think LAPD would make of a code 12?
