Heya, peoples.

I was just wondering if anyone knows where I can find info on suzuki driveshafts - which ones will fit into a Sammy/"fat prop" 413, how long they are compressed and extended, how long the splined end is, if you can mix and match parts etc.

The reason I ask is that I was thinking the other day that if you could take a longer splined half (say, out of a grand vitara or a LWB sammy) and mix it with the non-splined half (the "reciever" half?) from a different vehicle, you might end up with a shaft that suits a lifted SJ.

I want to do away with my spacers (to get a better angle with my shafts) but I don't want a stronger driveshaft - I want it to be a "fuseable link". I want to upgrade other parts of my drivetrain, but I want the bit that fails to be easy to replace. And I can't think of any bit of the drivetrain that's easier to replace than the props.

Google is not being helpful here, so I was wondering if one of you chappies knew of a database/table out there?

410 props are slightly longer than samurai ones. around 30-40mm at a guess?

you can mix and match most of the sj propshafts but I'm pretty sure the female end is the same length on all of the them (I could be wrong but all the ones I have seen are) and the male end is the one that is a different length.

If you know someone with a lathe it's not had to lengthen them, or if you are handy with an angle grinder you could probably get away with not using a lathe

I would do this slightly differently though and use an extra section of the female end of the prop off another prop, rather than cutting it and having a gap, that way you'll have more length of splines engaged at all times.

I'll have to get hold of some 410 shafts then. I'm not sure I want to cut'n'shut a prop, I have no way of balancing it.

I think that having more spline length engaged is probably a good idea. If I thought I wouldn't make a hash of it, I'd have a go at welding an extra piece of splined prop to the end of a male prop, and then use an angry grinder to "respline" through the welded area.

I am, however, entirely sure I'd cock it up *royally* and end up with a banana shaped propshaft.

You seem to be right there.

I may talk to a breaker I know who breaks vitaras, jimny's and SJ's, and see if I can get some measurements. I need some springs and a Jimny PAS setup off him anyway.

I'm sure if you could mix and match bits, it'd be a worthwhile mod. Although from what Scottie says, the 410 props sound like they're exactly what I need - no mixing or matching.

If you slide both female sections over the male part of a prop and then weld them together it will keep them 'true' then sleeve it as shown in the write-up and you shouldn't need to be balance it as long as you are careful enough. and all the welding is nice and even, it would be a lot easier and stronger than trying to weld on an extra bit of the male section.

Well, if I can't find a set of propshafts that are the right length for my SJ (410 props or whatever), then I'll look into doing something like that.

I just like the idea of having a longer splined section, because then you've got more splined "area" engaged more of the time. I wouldn't actually try it - not with the skills/tools I've got!
