fourtrak axles on an sj??

Post by Jay30685 » Sat Oct 20, 2012 7:18 pm

As title guys, I'm looking to possibly putting a pair of fourtrak axles on my sj, it will give me more width and help with turning circle since I've put 33" wheels on.

Does anyone know what needs to be altered to get them on, besides leaf mounts, I know they will need altering

Four traks are Independant are they not, so this would mean the control arms/wishbone's would catch or limit lift? Correct me if I'm wrong is this not the downfall to vitara's?

Personally for less work, Samurai axles will go on easy enough ScottieJ on here, said that the spring seats need moving 42.5mm inwards iirc, and Mike Harris has a set, also if you have a 413 the propshaft flanges should fit.

I may be wrong, but my mate has gone for discovery axles on his Vitara due to the independant front (and weak diff)

Early fourtracks have a live axle on the front as well chaps.

Daihatsu axles are pretty darn strong however aftermarket parts for them like lockers are hard to get and very expensive to import. you will probably need to redrill the diff flanges to bolt up the sj props, I'm not sure but the pcd might be different?

Also you need to bare in mind the diff ratios available, this would be the big deciding factor for me!

F80 axles are 3.909 so would be ok with 33s but not great, they are the same as sj413 (not samurai) diffs
F50 are 3.545. F60 and F70 axles are 3.363 so would be aweful with 33s and put a lot of extra strain on your engine and transmission.
F10 are 5.571 and F20 are 4.777 so these would be lower than what you want ideally want if you drive the sj on road and are also probably very hard to find and I don't know if they fit the later axles or not????

What about getting some wheels with a larger offset to give you more clearance from the springs? Or as others have said if yours is not a samurai then samurai axles will give you some extra width and are easy to fit.

Thanks for info guys. Both my sjs had samurai badges on the grill

The wheels are a straight swap, yeah scottiej I mean the older fourtrak, I used to have a spare pair of complete axles but binned them a few months ago when I sold my fourtrak.

My wheels are 16's and as far as I'm aware there aren't any others that fit? They are grand vitara rims

I'm happy to 're drill flanges etc.

What other axles would bolt up to my leafs then? I will change rims to 6 stud if I have too, it just needs more width!

Thanks for help so far

The only option in my opinion is Toyota axles, good selection of diff ratios, wide and strong.

But and it's a big but! You loose a lot of ground clearance under the diffs, it would be the equivalent of running 30-31" tyres on sj axles.

I personally would stick with the samurai axles but get some wheels with a large offset. Or some wheel spacers.

I'm on samurai axles with 10" wide wheels and its more than wide enough I think. ;) it's only 5" taller than it is wide

Thanks for info,

You seem to know what your talking about... my other thoughts are wheel spacers, but not sure I will get enough to go full lock on steering, widen my sj axles, or, and this is the personal favorite... cut the welds off the centre of my wheels, and 're weld them about 4" back... basically, behind the centre hump rather than infront... what are your opinion s on that?

I guess your main problem is the tyres catching the springs then? I don't have that problem so much as my springs are further inboard as I've got a 410 chassis.

Cutting and rewelding the centres of the wheels is a good option, gotta make sure you jig them up well so they end up true
There are legality issues if used on road but who's gonna be able to tell if you do it well! Seems to be a bit of a grey area as well? Rhino rays sells modded sj wheels with a large offset and loads of people run banded steels on road cars with no issues etc?

That's only because you've left the window screen on. Chop it down and you'd be 5" wider than tall.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.
