I thought the same. Where the bell housing bolts to the block some of the bolt holes have these 'dowels', basically a short bit of tube that locates the gearbox on the engine then a bolt goes through the middle of it.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Cheers for all the help chaps. I was too busy tryin not to get covered in gearbox oil or hit by it as it dislodged to care what it was. Then i wondered how important is it?
