1.6 8v conversion snags
1.6 8v conversion snags
Ive taken on someone elses half finished 1.6 8v conversion in a sj and just wanted to clear up a couple of snags ive come across as its to cold to be making to many mistakes.
It had a 1.3 gear box bolted to it with only 2 bolts holding it on (one on the left and one on the right) there were 2 bolts missing from the top, the holes in the engine i think are 12mm fine thread but the holes that line up with it in the gear box are 10mm wide. Am i right in thinking i have to drill out the 2 top gear box holes to 12mm?
Also i can make out that the clutch bolted onto the fly wheel is a valeo one, the clutch and fly wheel to my understanding needs to be from a 1.3 right? If so how can i tell if its a 1.3 flywheel and clutch.
Thx again

Re: 1.6 8v conversion snags
Yes the top bolts holes need drilling out and the bolts from the vit used.
The 1600 clutch and flywheel wont physically fit inside the 1300 gearbox so you are all good there.

Re: 1.6 8v conversion snags
Its dead easy.... I've done 5 of them so far
if you are replacing an engine anyway there's almost no point in not putting a 1.6 in hehe

Re: 1.6 8v conversion snags
Iv just done this conversion nit that hard at all. Hardest bit for me was the loom with me keeping it as a spi. The gains that I hav got make it well worth it

Done it 3 times. Nice and easy. Great power/torque for weight and size.

Do you normally ditch the SPI system and just stick a weber or SU on it then ?

They may have converted 1.6 carbs to SU carbs
