Joes build.

Post by mk1joe » Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:51 pm

Hey guys
It feels good to start a fresh, especially with a very different project. The reason i bought this one was because i wanted an upgrade, but turns out im pretty much hooked on suzukis now. and i must say this is a vast improvement! its much more comfortable on the road and generally more like a modern car all round. but most of all i love having carpet:) the first thing i need to set my hands to is the carburetor, it seems very temperamental but i will come back to this when its finished. so for now heres a few pictures to keep the interest up:)

started with coulor coding the gear knob:)

Things i dont like about my carburetor.

Image

Well first of all and most importantly i dont like how it doesn't work very well, when i first got it there was no power whatsoever but i solved this by warping the down pipe in hot coolant hose. now this works fine, occasionally... it still feels very temperamental, it works ok when its warm and sometimes surprises me when it kicks out a good blast of power, but a lack of power often still occurs.

Image

now i probably could have a fiddle with it and make it work better, i expect its the mixture, or a blocked jet or something. but theres a few other things im not to happy about.

Im really not a fan of how it rubs on the bonnet. i dont like that :(

Image

and im not really 100% sure on the method of fixing the choke cable.

Image

but over all its just generally lost my trust as a carburetor, so ive ordered a new one and fingers crossed i will get along with this one a bit better;)

Thats why mine has a hole in the bonnet. Rockwatt is doing me a proper manifold for each of mine. Then i'll swap the bonnets around.

One of my SUs is missing a couple of bits but they can be ordered from Burlen.

What carb you gonna fit?

Pull the dash pot off and make sure the piston can move freely, also they are quite fussy about the damper oil and level, so make sure you fill it with some sae20 weight oil or proper SU oil and to the correct level, they are very simple carbs but do like to be set up properly. Have a look here for lots of info on setting them up http://sucarb.co.uk/technical-hif-type- ... ing-single

When the fuel mixture is right if you use a small screwdriver to slowly lift the piston about 1-2mm you should hear the revs rise slightly and then settle back down.

The dash pot thing is all good, checked that before I sold it joe.

I think it just needs setting up, I'd keep the su joe.

Just pay a specialist to set it up, that's my advice mate :)

cool mate:) il deffinately keep the su to put back on in the future but i think il try setting up my own carb that sits straight onto the inlet manifold to prevent it icing up. fingers crossed anyway, il keep you updated:)

Working late into the night

received my new carburetor yesterday and it looked great! so the plan is to save fitting it until the weekend so i could do it all properly and logically, but the temptation was just to much. so i ended up working quite late into the night trying to get it done as i need it for collage tomorrow, (not putting myself under any stress or nothing...)

Image

but anyway its now fitted to a certain standard that i have self acceptance with. i took it out for a quick test and it feels a lot more sturdy:) theres no flat spots anymore and it feels like theres loads of power there and she pulls like a steam train. although it feels a little less nippy but i have still yet to tune it and fiddle with it and make it perfect:)

Image

please do excuse the air filter btw... just until i find a proper one, hehehe

and i will try and get a few more pictured of it later as this is a really cool looking carburetor and this picture does not do it justice 8-)
