timing marks help!!

Post by timwilks13 » Wed Mar 06, 2013 8:55 pm

For one reason or another I need to sort the timing on my sj410, the only timing marks I have are on the cam shaft in the form of an arrow on the timing pulley that says '88', and on the top of the timing belt cover in the 12 o'clock position. There are no timing marks on the crankshaft pulley anywhere, so my question to you is, when piston 1 is at TDC on the compression stroke, where should the cam shaft timing mark be in relation to the mark above it on the casing? Hopefully she will be ready for taking out this weekend if I get this sorted!

Do you not have the timing marks on the flywheel, under the rubber bung on the gearbox housing ??

That's really helpful thanks, however now I have top dead centre, how do I know where the cam shaft should be at the point of top dead center?

OK I'm really sorry, just got hold of a Haynes manual online for these and when the crankshaft is at TDC the cam shaft mark aligns with the mark on the outer casing, I thought as much but needed confirmation. Sorry for wasting everyone's time!

No worries. Timing is something you don't want to get wrong. ;) Even if an F10A is non-interference.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

OK another marking query, when rotating the fly wheel there are a few marks as indicated in the picture above, but someone before me has gone paint crazy and made it nearly impossible to see where the TDC mark and the 10° BTDC is. From the first mark on the fly wheel, how many lines is it till TDC, or how many degrees does each indicator represent?
