Right, so the point of this is to talk about M series engine specs and swaps etc. I thought I'd lead with a post about specs, which can be edited if needs be - as a kind of reference.

Geoff - one of the things that made me think that the blocks are all the same is this:

http://www.topspindesign.com/consumer/swift.htm

By the looks of it, they supply the same parts to M13, M15 and M16 owners to upgrade them to 1.9 litres. Swapping out the cylinder liners, pistons, rods, cranks etc seems to make them all equal.

This suggests to me that you might be able to mix and match standard parts. For example, putting the 1.8 aside, they're all 78mm bore engines - so putting a 1.6 crank, rods, pistons in a 1.3 should instantly give you a 1.6.

I read on another forum that many Aussies swap out the 1.3 for a 1.6, and don't even change the ECU - so perhaps they even share the same ECU map!

We would need to know the block heights really as there's quite a big stroke difference between the engines, could be that they run different piston compression heights in the larger size engines though instead of a taller block? I know this is what they did between the F8 and F10 engines to increase the capacity.

Lovin it!

The Ignis M15a sounds like the best conversion option if you're going to keep it on the road (sub-1500cc means lower tax I think), and the M16a SX4 4WD if it's off-road only.

Scottie - I was looking for the block heights all over the place, but I can't find any info! I'm trying to find solid info on the M series engines, the VW 1.2 litre ali TD engines (from the Polo Bluemotion/Skoda Greenline II) and the Suzuki 1.3 DDiS engines. I may never do a swap, but if I do I'd *like* a lightweight diesel with similar HP to the G13, more torque, and similar weight (less would be good! Pipe dream, anyone?) but there's bugger all info out there (at least, bugger all that Google knows about). How you got so much info on the G series engines is beyond me!

Edweird - my thoughts exactly. Although personally I'd like to get my hands on a G15a, as it should be an easier swap because it's a G13 block with slightly larger bores (according to http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_2893/article.html) - and the G's are slightly lighter than the M's - but the G15 is like hen's teeth, so for a straight swap, it looks like the Ignis Sport M15a is the best all round. Looks like Ladaman got it spot on!

Anyone know if the G15 liners/pistons etc can fit a G13 for a larger bore? Or if you can swap out the crank/pistons/rods etc and get a longer stroke?

Well I have determined that the Ignis was indeed sold in Cyprus. In fact looking at the images of a car for sale it has EXACTLY the same recarro seats I bought for my Samurai thinking they were Suzuki Swift seats. My friend in Nicosia is pretty well informed and has many contacts within the trade. Time to give him a call!

I heard just recently that there a loads of spare parts for Japanese cars around now following the Tsunami. Many damaged cars have been stripped down and parts being sold abroad.

Forget the info from my friend in Nicosia - I think I just blew his mind! :-)

Geoff, I'm pretty sure the seats you have fitted are the ones from the Ignis I am using for the engine, as it was my son you bought them from. I think.

And Anton, I only got it "spot on", 'cos my son like hot hatches and crashed it!!

Ha! Ladaman!! Of course I thought I recognised your name, it rang a bell but for the life of me I couldn't remember!! Well let me just say they were not a straightforward fit but with a little bracketery they are in and I love them! They are like night and day!

Any progress with the engine swap?
